Project: Fly Tying Room

Foreword
Wednesday, 20 December 2006
After we had puchased ourselves a new house, finally I was able to get myself a room, where I can use only for my fly tying and rodbuilding. I got 3,6 x 2,7 m room from side building right next to house. For previous owner it was a storage room with big brick owen inside. That room indeed filled my needs and requirements so all I needed to do is rebuild it again.

In this blog you can follow how my project slowly carries on as I'm able to do it basically only on weekends and some few hours now and then after my normal work days. Right here at the beginning I need to thank Outi for letting me have the room and my father who has and will be a great help for me during this project. Also bottom of the page you can leave comments about my project and about the room itself.

Demolishing
Thursday, 28 December 2006
Without any more thinking I needed to get rid of the big baking owen at my room. It's straightforward job to do I thought, I only need percussion drilling machine to do the job. Right, true it is, but it took some more effort than that. Dimensions of that oven were 1,5 x 1,2 x 1,3 metres.

I have borrowed a big hand drill made by Hilti and started the job after Christmas holidays. I tried to break down the oven as careful as possible, because I have a need for unbroken bricks for another project at oncoming summer. So on morning I started the drill and brick by brick oven did get smaller. Room was filled with dust from bricks and plaster. After few hours room started to fill up by bricks and other construction waste from that oven which looked so small and compact when I started the job. Truth was slowly revealing itself to me.

I tried to lay unbroken bricks to one pile and depris to another during the process. I managed to do well at first, but then room just got more and more filled. So fortunately my father volunteered to come to take one trailer load of waste bricks away while I was constantly making more of it.

After 9 hours of hard work oven was torn down. Now the room needed a serious cleaning. It turned out that cleaning of the room took longer than I thought. I took all unbroken tiles to separate pile at my carage and rest we took away with trailer. Three full loads were taken away and still there was a massive pile of usable tiles at my carage, where they are waiting to be re-used.

When the room was cleaned, it was time to see the destruction I have caused. The bed and walls behind of the owen were in good shape after drilling. What worries me was upper part of the wall. At some part water has leaked down at side of the chimney. I needed to remove one chipboard from ceiling and see if there's any damage under it at roof. Fortunate glass wool under it was dry and only that cipboard needs to be changed. Also rest of wall surface needed cleaning. Cleaning in this case meant drilling again. I needed to clean it all the way to roughcast, so it can be painted again. After some hours of more drilling the wall was alright.

Then another problem arised. The damper at chimney was rust into its place. No way I was able to remove it from its frame. I tried with rust remover and boulder damper via chimney with no results. Well, there was a one thing I could do: drill it off. And so I did.

After that I torn down all shelves, cabins, wood boxes, etc from the room. Finally I was able to start to think about re-building.

Planning
Friday, 29 December 2006
First thing to do was to think how I'll set up the room. What I need to have in there? How those square metres will be planned so it's as fuctional as possible. As oven was now gone and its place was standing there empty, it was more easy to see and picture oncoming items in.

The planning I started kinda reversed way. The thinking process started by making up my mind what surface materials I wanna use in that room. I wanted it to fit as well as possible to fly tying and rod builing and in a way get influeced by those dear hobbies of mine. First thing to buy there was floor laminate. I wanted to have floor material to be very abrasion resistant as you step into room straight outside. Hence laminate as floor material was natural choise for me.

Second thing I decided that there will become a fireplace to remind me of the oven and warm me at cold winter nights when I spend in there to tie few flies and build rods. So as now oven bed was still rough, it would be good to make a hole to chimney for fireplace. Hence I needed to choose and order a small fireplace and based on installation instructions drill a hole to chimney.

I hope I can now forget drilling for some time. To help to visualize the future setup, I sketched the layout to cross-ruled paper. And indeed it helped a lot and I was able get better picture of the entity. During that process, materials were more clear at my mind: Front of fireplace will be made with natural stone, walls will get coating with old barn wall boards, furniture will be antique stained pine, fireplace wall and roof natural white....

Masonry starts
Saturday, 30 December 2006
On friday my father had brought me stones for fireplace bed and some more old bricks he had for decoration wall. So first when there still was enough daylight outside we chose stones to floor and prepared them so that we can put them on later. Chosing and cutting stones is kinda timeconsuming job. All our friday was gone by doing preparations for saturday.

On saturday it was really a first day to start building.First we needed to install new damper to chimney. Also ash hatch was masoned to bottom of the chimney.  I have decided that we make a brick wall to left side of the firewall. This was made to deal with safety distance fireplace needed. But now because of the wall at left, fireplace can't be placed to center of the wall. Hence an extra brick wall was needed for right side of the fireplace as well.

Rest of the day we had left we used to mason right brick wall. Rest of the job was postponed to next year.

Masonry continues
Tuesday, 02 January 2007

New year has started and my Christmas vacation is over. So when I went to work my father came to continue to build up second brick wall to left side of the fireplace by his own. I'm very fortunate to have such a help as he is. When I came from work the the left brick wall was built and some pits and holes at wall were filled.

In the evening I layed stones to oven bed and readied them for tomorrow. Father said he'll come again tomorrow to put stones in.

Stones are put in
Wednesday, 03 January 2007
He did what he promised on tuesday. I left a little early from work to visit at furniture shop to ask some prices for items I planned to put in. While I was driving there I got a phone call, my father called and said he'll go now, stones are on place.

After a visit to furniture shop, I drove at electric outfitter's and bought what I needed to set up electricity as I want. Also I bought paint for the fireplace wall and roof, maybe at weekend I can start painting if I get electricity done before that...

Furniture order
Thursday, 04 January 2007
For today there's no building for me. I just visited furniture shop and ordered fly tying table, one cabinet/chest of drawers combo and corner shelf.

Brick walls ready
Saturday, 06 January 2007
Another day of rebuilding behind. I spent a long day in that room and got a lot done. Ceiling is now ready, we replaced removed chipboard, made a case over heating tubes at roof, finalized the brick walls and I got some of electricity cables put on places. Now fireplace area only needs stone floor seams to be made and wall painted, then it's finally done.

On tomorrow morning I try to be back there right at the morning and do some painting...

Painting started
Sunday, 07 January 2007
Sunday was a day of painting to me. At the morning after breakfast I left again to continue the project. First thing to do was to clean up places so I could start paint the wall. First I carried all construction waste outside and moved not needed tools to another room. Then good hovering to floor and wall to remove dust. Then brick walls needed some covering so I wouldn't mess them with paint. After that I was ready to start painting.

I have chosed to do the painting with little shaded Kolibri decoration paint. I had never used that paint before and as I opened the can, I was surprised to see "paint" inside. It reminded more porridge than paint. Well, "It will learn me on the way" I thought and started with brush to get edges and wall sides well done. Painting was going fine until I started to paint flat surface. I though to do it with paint roller, well it didn't work because paint didn't stick onto it. Hence I needed to continue with brush. I tried to add paint to wall with brush and then flatten it with roller. Didn't work, hence I did all the wall with brush. One picture of wall was taken to finish morning work.

After wall painting it was time to get inside, eat some and get a small nap. My daughter Aino came to wake me up from sofa with kiss on a cheek. Good way to wake up. I returned back to project room and prepared the roof so I can paint today as well. I removed lights and all elecricity wires from roof and cleaned the ceiling. Before starting paint the ceiling I had a closer look to wall I painted on morning. I wasn't pleased on result: Color differences at wall showed clearly through. The reason was too obvious, I have used way too little paint. That mistake I won't do with the ceiling. I did again apply paint to roof with brush and then equalize the pattern with paint roller. Now it worked as planned as I had enough paint at roof. I carried on with painting as long as Aino and Outi returned home and my neck was too sore to continue. Maybe tomorrow I can finnish the painting....

Nightshift
Monday, 08 January 2007

I wasn't able to continue building until half past nine pm tonight. The project is now at a stage I didn't wanna skip even one day. So I went in and started where I stopped last night. First I finished painting the ceiling. I had still some paint left so as I needed to re-paint the fireplace wall, I used paint left to do the wall as long as it lasted. After that I could feel the need of sleep already so cleaned painting tools and headed straight to bed...

Some more done
Wednesday, 10 January 2007

Still lacking a time to continue the project. I had only less than hour to use today to spend at my project room. I continued to paint the wall for second time from where I stopped when I run out of paint. Now sidewall is completely done. Backwall painting needs to wait still some time. Going to finish it after I get fireplace installed and heated the wall throughly. There's still some moisture at wall because the leak which was there when we moved to house.

Also some electricity work was carried on. All ceiling installations are done and light at roof is connected.

Preparations
Saturday, 13 January 2007
Saturday was a day of preparation. We first thought to seam the fireplace floors stones, but then I decided to go to buy another seaming material. Hence all we were able to do was to cover edges of the stones with masking tape. It would help a big deal when cleaning the stones after seaming.

We also removed all old electricity and installed new wiring system, light switch and wall sockets.

Later on evening I went to clean the room fully and make preparations for floor installation. I even had time to put floor underside layer on place. Tomorrow I could start making the floor...

Floor ready
Sunday, 14 January 2007
For sunday I had only one task on mind: Make the floor. I started a day with removing old drain pipes and then I was ready to start. Making laminate floor is very straightforward job to do. In floor making I didn't have any problems, only walls caused some extra thinking because there were not in straight angle with each other. So some extra sawing was needed...

It took 4 hours to finish the floor. And I'm happy with the result...

Fireplace arrived
Friday, 19 January 2007
Fireplace arrived today. Shame I can't put it on yet, because still waiting seaming materials for floor stones. Going to get them on Tuesday. Then we are going to continue, goal is to get stones finished. Also I'm going to purchase wall materials and going to get them prepared to be mounted later next week. Watch out picture updates around middle of next week...

Stones Seamed
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Finally on today I got the seaming material for stones. When I left work, I picked up my father and we drove to local shop to buy some pine boards to walls. Well they didn't have any. What a joke the whole trip to that shop was. We have prepared to go to carpenter's shop to plane the surface of those boards. Needed to cancel all that. Not a good start.

Fortunately the seaming material had arrived, so we have some things to do for sure. I again protected the floor and first we attached stones to top of both brick walls. After that we started seaming the floor. At that point we were so happy that we put masking tapes to stone edges, made the job much more easier as you didn't have to be that careful with messing up the stones. After seaming plaster was placed on, we let it dry for an hour.

After hour passed we came back and removed all masking tapes and smoothed the seams with moistured foam plastic. It made the seam very neat. Now I just need to wait day or so, before I can continue...

Boards are home
Thursday, 25 January 2007
On morning while I was at work, my father drove to sawmill and got 150 metres pine boards. When my wroking day was over we met at carpenter's shop and planed sides and surface of every board. After an hour job was done and we took boards to my home. Due to snowing, boards were little moist, so we scattered them around at my project room to dry.

I have also got a phone call from furniture shop that items I had ordered earlier have arrived. Now I'm facing lack of free space. I can't put anything more to room, because I already don't have enough work space. Need to store them into house somewhere for meanwhile....

Weekend update
Sunday, 28 January 2007
Damn I hate winter. It slows my project badly and freezes my butt.

On saturday I started to saw wall boards into right lengths and place them around walls to see I get all correct. Length of the boards are not constant so I needed to saw one and then measure the next. And I did sawing outside with -10C and snowing. During saturday I finished one wall and then it was time for some sauna and relaxing.

On sunday morning snowing has ended, but wind become instead. Also temperature have drop a tad more. I carried along where I stopped on yesterday. My father came to help me after he got his car brake disks free from ice (were stuck) and we got all boards cut. Unfortunately I was short of boards, so we need to go pick up few more blanks. After boards were done we did straighten wall opposite to door and then we called end for a day.

Next week I need to go to get some paint and get wall painted under the boards and wax wall boards. After those wall is ready to be finished.

Chaos
Tuesday, 30 January 2007
For Tuesday I took day of my work so I can do much at project room. I started to sleep a little longer than normal. It did good to start morning without a rush to anywhere. I got myself to work around ten at morning. First thing to do was clean the room a bit and decide where to start. I cleared the floor so I can start paint walls between fireplace wall and door. Before painting I protected the floor fireplace stones carefully.

When all preparations were done, I painted the wall with matte black. The colors only option is to make background dissappear after I put boards to wall. While paint was drying, I made the hole at chimney to fireplace a tad bigger so I could easily put an insulation between metal pipe and wall stones.

Time flied and it was time to have a small break. Needed to go to buy my daughter a birthday present, she's turning two tomorrow. As she likes very much slide down at local slopes, I bought her brand new Stiga (snow sledge). Hope temperature would raise a bit, because at the moment it's way too cold to go outside gliding ( -23C as I write this)

After I returned from shop I started to wax wall boards. I used Osmo Colors wood wax for it. The color of the wax is hazel and it brought grains of the wood nicely out. Difference of plain and waxed boards can be seen at pics under.

After days work, there few things I can say. I got plenty done and I left chaos behind. Due to fact that I don't have any other place to do waxing, I need to place boards to lean the wall until they are dry. Hence the situation now is that it's hard to fit in anymore.

Slow Motion
Sunday, 04 February 2007

Rest of the week was kinda slow motion for my project. I assembled the fly tying table and cabinet with Aino. It took already few evenings to put those together. On the weekend we celebrated Aino's 2nd birthday, so not much was done at building. Only thing I managed to do was wax one set of wall boards on Sunday morning. Well, now on next week the plan is to install those 40 boards already waxed and prepare boards for rest of the wall. If I get really going well, maybe fireplace can be mounted as well. We will see...

First walls ready
Thursday, 08 February 2007
Today finally I started to put borads on wall with my father. After some preparations and measurements it was time to start put boards to wall. First board went in nice and when putting on second, the nailer broke down. After some cursing, we headed to local hardware store and bought new nailer. After we had mounted eight boards, we did again some measurements and found that gap between boards was too small in order to get boards evenly at wall. Some cursing again before undo the wall.

Time to start again from scratch. Now we had new gap measurement and placed again those same eight boards to wall and did some measurements again. This time gap was right and we could carry on. Rest of the walls were done easily. Now all already waxed boards were installed. Next job to do is to prepare next boards to finish rest of the walls.

Waxing goes on
Sunday, 11 February 2007
Won't bore you with images of my weekend tasks showing only blanks. Weekend was kinda busy with other more important matters and hence not much was done at project room (once again). I only got few more blanks cutted to fit and another bunch waxed. The work of rest of the wall slows down all the time because there more difficult pieces to make. I can't make those pieces untill I get previous blanks installed in order to get perfect fit.

So I hope that during next few days I can get rest of the wall painted black and get all walls done by the weekend. We see how it goes...

More black
Tuesday, 13 February 2007

At today I got chance to do some preparation tasks for rest of the walls. I cleaned the floor and covered floor edges with masking tape, I started to paint the wall with black paint. After an hour or so painting was done. Now on next work event I can put more already waxed boards to wall. I will attach more pictures of the project next time when more boards are installed...

Nightshift part II
Wednesday, 14 February 2007
Aino was in sleep when I went back on project room to finish those preparation tasks for tomorrow. On tomorrow my father comes again and we are going to install all waxed boards to wall. I still needed to cut 8 boards around the window so we can put them on at same time. Also if I have those boards done, we can put radiator back on wall as well. Hence the haste with those bits.

I started by sawing those boards to exact fit. They were done around ten and then I started to wax all prepared boards. I got all done around 11pm, cleaned the paint brush and headed to bed. Felt good that I got those done, now at tomorrow we can get more done...

Some progress with walls
Thursday, 15 February 2007
Fortunately the wax had dried I applied to boards last night. We started to put on new boards to wall with my father around 5 pm and get them placed some past seven. So it took two hours to put on few boards. But that part of the wall was the trickiest, we needed to go over door and around window. Glad it's done now, just need to make 3 small and 1,5 full length pieces to finish that wall completely. Maybe on weekend I get more done...

Five more to make
Sunday, 18 February 2007

Walls are doing better day by day. I have today cutted eleven more boards to fit the wall. I decided to prepare all the boards needed to finish the wall and then wax them all at once. By doing that job will get done more efficiently. So I just need to finish 5 more boards and then wax all and mount them on, then the walls are done. I'm happy with the progress of this week :)

I'm so anxious to get the room done as I should receive next week two more blanks to build. Need to get room done before I can start to put rods together...

Boards cutted
Monday, 26 February 2007
Finally I got those nasty last boards cutted and fitted to wall. They needed a lot of work in order to get them fit as perfectly as possible around corners, electric wires, water tap, water pipes, etc. Now I just need to get them off the wall once more and wax them. Also some detail painting needs to be done and then walls are finally complete. So next jobs are to remove unwaxed boards, do some painting to walls and ceiling and then install boards to wall. When that is done, it's time to put fireplace on its place and start building cover for electricity hubstation and put sink into its place...

Boards finished
Thursday, 01 March 2007
On wednesday it was a first time my daughter Aino (just turned 2 years) was working with me. I didn't think we could do much together, but I was wrong. She was very very excited to get into that room where father always worked. So we went there and she wanted to clean, because daddy has been messy as she said. So I got hear small brush and she started to brush the floor clean.

Meanwhile I had a time to remove all non-waxed boards from wall and place them on one pile to wait to be waxed. Then I started to help Aino on cleaning and as a bonus we got room tidy. Was a good hour there with my daughter.

Today I got some time from Outi to work and I decided to use that time to wax rest of the boards. After an hour and a half job was done. Now let them dry and going to put them on at weekend.

Walls done
Sunday, 04 March 2007
On weekend I got finally the hardest bit of wall finally done and it means all walls are now finished. I also did some finetune painting to ceiling so it can be count as done as well.

On Sunday I started to build flyrod building table from me. I needed a long table for it (comes to front of window) and was about to go and buy some wood for it, but fortunately I remembered that we had our old kitchen table at our storage. It is made from pine, it only needed some finetuning. The surface was not that good looking due its age and hard use. I used 60 grit sandpaper to sand it smooth and remove all varnish from the surface. Final touch was made with 120 grit sandpaper. Now the table looks much better. On tomorrow my father comes to help me to cut it in two pieces and then I can start putting it in and put some finish top of it.

Fire is up :)
Monday, 12 March 2007
During the last weekend we got fireplace mounted on its place. Finally there's some light at end of tunnel concerning this project. I got it now almost done and the timing was perfect, because I started a second project with livingroom fireplace last sunday.

Today I went to project room with Aino and we first cleaned the room. All construction waste were cleaned out and floor got hovered. After that Aino did place first log into fireplace and I put the fire on. Oh, it felt so nice. Project is finally reaching its end soon. Now I can carry first furniture in this week and start using the room. There is still few tasks to be done like cleats to stonefloor edges, sink to wall, two wall sockets, cleat to doorstep and finish the rodbuilding table. But still now the room is already useable, which is the most important.
